Screenings at the IFC Center in New York City
The New York International Children's Film Festival has announced the showings of animated features Summer Wars and Azur and Asmar in August at the IFC Center theater. Summer Wars is the award winning film from MADHOUSE, screenwriter Satoko Okudera and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. The film features a modern-day family involved with a conflict between their world and the virtual world known as Oz. The festival will show Summer Wars in Japanese with English subtitles on August 28 and August 29 under the label "Encore screening." Summer Wars previously made an appearance at NYICFF along with other American premieres such as Mai Mai Miracle and Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror. Summer Wars has been licensed by North American anime distributor Funimation.
Azur and Asmar is a French film written and directed by Michel Ocelot. The film focuses on Azur, a blonde, and blue-eyed son of a noblewoman, and Asmar, a dark skinned and dark-eyed child of their nurse, raised as brothers. They have heard legends of the Djinn Fairy in their childhood and seek it out in their adulthood, but only one of the two youths can be successful. The festival will show Azur and Asmar in English on August 20 through August 22 at 11:00 a.m. Studio Ghibli helped distribute this film in Japan.
